UAAP S76 | Bulldogs win against Tigers; 4 teams tied with 2-1 record

During their first match, the NU Bulldogs who are considered as the top contenders of the season beat UST Growling Tigers. NU Coach Eric Altamirano chose UST as their team’s top contender.

The Tigers and the Bulldogs exchanged turns in the basket in the first quarter. However, NU made a 12-0 run to close the quarter at 22-15.

At the start of the second period of the game, UST made 3 consecutive triples and a layup to counter the 12-0 run by NU. Troy Rosario of NU triggered an 11-0 run. Teng stopped the run with score from transition.

Late in the second quarter, King Tiger Jeric Teng was hit by NU’s Jeff Javillonar. Teng suffered shoulder pain as he fell badly with Javillonar’s hit from the back. From then, Teng sat down for the rest of the game.

Without Teng, the Espana-based squad had a hard time scoring as Parks showed his might with 20 pts, 6 rebs, 6 asts, and 2 stls. NU big man Emmanuel Mbe made a double-double with 17 pts and 11 rebs.

Teng left the game after playing 17 minutes and scoring only 7 pts. Kevin Ferrer, Tigers’ key defender for Parks, also made 20 pts. Ed Daqioag provided 13 pts.

NU took the advantage of Teng’s absence. Mbe and Parks dominated the third quarter as they scored all but two of the 17 points made by NU.

It wasn’t an easy 4th quarter for NU as the Tigers almost made a comeback and reduced the lead from 10 to 5. The yellow-clad team managed to put NU in penalty but the Tigers had a difficult time at the free throw line. Out of 24 chances at the free throw line, UST completed 15. Daqioag and Ferrer shot 2 of 5 free throws to reduce the lead to 4. Rosario went to the line to complete his free throws making it 70-64 with 6 seconds left in the game. Ferrer shot a long jumper with only 2 seconds left. Rono was fouled and split his free throws. The game ended with NU winning 71-67.
