UAAP S76 | FEU leads with 2 wins; Ateneo, winless champs?

Unfortunately, the Katipunan squads, Ateneo and UP, are still winless after the third day of UAAP Men’s Basketball.

After winning against Filoil champs UE Red Warriors, the FEU Tamaraws won their second straight game against the 5-peat champions Ateneo Blue Eagles.

During the first half of the game, Blue Eagles led the game with the help of veteran player Ryan Buenafe. Buenafe stepped up for his team as star player Kiefer Ravena is still out with right ankle sprain.

The Tams wasted a double digit lead at the start of the final quarter. With Buenafe’s triples and Ateneo’s free throws, FEU lead went back to 1. Ateneo rookie player Newsome splits his free throws to tie the game at 59. The Morayta team tried to close the game with 5 point lead. Just before the last 2 minutes of regulation, Elorde hits a three. FEU center Anthony Hargrove went to the line and completed his 2 free throws. Newsome scored another 2-pointer. Ten seconds before the end of regulation, Newsome tied the game with his two free throws. Game regulation ended with 66-66 score each.

During the overtime, the game got into its 4th deadlock with 50 seconds more to go. Ateneo looked ready to steal the lead after former MVP RR Garcia missed his lay-up. Roger Pogoy stole the ball away from Buenafe for a follow up. After being fouled by former Archer Nico Elorde, Romeo converted two free throws to give his team a four-point cushion with 18 seconds left.

Son of former FEU coach, Gwynne Capacio traded free throws with Romeo.

Quarterscores: 14-18, 31-33, 53-44, 66-66, 79-75
