In last Sunday’s match, the Archers’ second win in 14 games against Ateneo in UAAP was delivered by bench players, Arnold Van Opstal and Luigi dela Paz. Coming from a shoulder injury last season, Dela Paz provided 10 pts for his team. He made this during the second half of the game. Van Opstal, who is also called as AVO, contributed 18 pts. DLSU bench outscored Ateneo, 28-9.
These are the stats of the first half (Source: GMA Network website):
The Eagles shot an impressive 17-of-36 (47.2 percent) from the field after the first 20 minutes. Newsome shot 8-of-9, converting all his seven makes from within the arc for 18 points. Meanwhile the Archers were 11-of-34 (32.4 percent), including Teng's 4-of-12 clip.
Ateneo also held a 5-10 advantage in turnovers, leading to an 18-4 spread in turnover points and 9-0 in fast break points.
The Archers turn things around during the third period as they made a 25-8 run with a Vosotres (Vosotros’ three) triggering the run. With only 18 seconds left in the clock, Archer big-man Arnold Van Opstal (AVO) made a bang and a bucket to get away from a deadlock at 56 pts. La Salle leads at the end of the quarter, 59-56.
At the start of the last quarter, both teams exchanged turns in free throws and shots in the paint. With less than 7 minutes in the game, Ateneo is just 1 point behind La Salle, 63-64.
However, Luigi dela Paz hits a triple to garner a 7-point cushion from Ateneo. Without their big guys, Ateneo was hopeless under the basket as they were outclassed by a more dominant Van Opstal.
Ateneo fall down for 3 times in a row in their bid for a 6-peat this season. Archers (2-1) are now behind the unbeaten FEU Tamaraws (3-0) and UST Growling Tigers (2-0).
